For a good 3-4 hours on Monday evening, news that former External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj was appointed the new Governor of Andhra Pradesh did the rounds. Before Swaraj stepped on to Twitter herself to deny the rumour.
Ironic that the former Foreign minister who made a name for herself by helping those in distress – lost passports, stranded passengers etc – and reached out to her over social media, especially Twitter, was the victim of gossip on the microblogging site.
But the one who had fuelled the rumours going around was her own former colleague and present Health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan who congratulated Swaraj over the `appointment’. Though he deleted the tweet a little later, the damage was done and the screenshot of his tweet was held as proof that someone senior in the government of India had spread the news.
Ever since Swaraj did not join the cabinet, reports that she will be sent on a gubernatorial posting have been doing the rounds. But Swaraj would be too senior for the position of the Governor, when her former colleagues like Venkaiah Naidu is the Vice President of India. That also Andhra Pradesh that does not even have a Raj Bhavan to accommodate the Governor in Amaravati.
At present, Governor ESL Narasimhan serves as Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and resides in the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. Whenever he has to travel to Andhra capital Amaravati on official work, he stays at a hotel in Vijayawada.
