YSRCP MLA delivers rice and vegetables amidst vulgar self-promotion

The intention was laudable but the manner in which Srikalahasti MLA B Madhusudhan Reddy went over the top, was in bad taste. On Saturday, the YSRCP legislator from the temple town in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh brought in 30 tractors to distribute vegetables and water melons and 5 kg of rice each to 10000 households in Srikalahasti town.

But in what was rather unnecessary, each tractor carried the flexi of individuals who had contributed to the PM CARES fund and the CM Relief Fund. That included doyens of Indian industry like Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and Azim Premji as well as film stars like Prabhas and Mahesh Babu. Chief minister Jaganmohan Reddy’s wife YS Bharathi also figured prominently in her capacity as an industrialist. On this road show, Madhusudhan Reddy also made sure photographs of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jagan were featured on every mini-hoarding as was his own photograph to let the citizens know who was providing the goodies.

While the doorstep delivery was worthy of appreciation, Reddy would have come out looking better if he had not converted it into a visual tamasha and self-promotion. The flexis made it seem like a page out of a feudal era where the mighty and the rich were showing mercy on the poor. At a time when citizens are aggrieved for no fault of theirs, this approach was vulgar and not desirable.

It must be pointed out that the legislator had in the past few days spent his time creating awareness among people, urging them to wear masks and asking them to stay at home. But this traffic stopper through the narrow roads of Srikalahasti also meant social distancing, as is evident in the photograph above, went for a toss.

Interestingly, this road show happened even as Rajasthan government banned selfies and photographs during distribution of ration and food packets.
