#CitizenHeroes : A positive trend to make the world a better place

Politicians are usually loathe to credit anyone else apart from themselves and like themselves being praised for anything that goes well. But in what is a heartwarming initiative on Twitter, KT Rama Rao makes it a point to highlight citizen heroes from Telangana everyday. The intention of the Telangana Municipal Administration and IT minister is to convey that fighting the Corona virus pandemic is not a government effort alone but one in which the citizens are leading from the front.

KTR’s citizen heroes cut across professional, age, region, religion and gender barriers. And by picking them from reportage in newspapers, he ensures the work by the individuals has already been verified by another organisation.

For instance, he named P Keerthan from Pocharam village in Ibrahimpatham mandal as his citizen hero. The class 6 student had donated Rs 13000 from his savings to 13 sanitation workers of his village, besides providing them with masks. Another day, he acknowledged two landlords – Koduri Balalingam of Siricilla district and Raghavendar Rao of Medak district for waiving off rent of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively, providing their tenants much-needed relief.

Doctors who are at the frontline of the war against Corona, have been duly acknowledged. KTR named as his citizen heroes Dr Mahboob Khan, his wife Dr Shahana Khan and daughter Dr Rashika Khan who are on duty at three different hospitals in Hyderabad, attending to patients.

#CitizenHeroes has now become a trend of sorts and many in the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti, apart from other citizens, are emulating KTR.

The Zilla Parishad Chairman of Mulugu acknowledged an Anganwadi teacher whose name he did not know for delivering eggs to lactating mothers on her two-wheeler in the remote tribal region of the district.

What the pandemic has shown humankind is that we are all very vulnerable against the invisible foe. A bit of humility, affection and empathy will go a long way in making the world a better and less toxic place to live in.
