Delhi government evinces interest in Disha Act

Chief minister Jaganmohan Reddy’s praise of his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhar Rao for the Hyderabad encounter and blaming National Human Rights Commission for its decision to probe it, was rather controversial. But the move to pass the Disha Act has got the Andhra Pradesh assembly much praise. While actors like Raashi Khanna have praised it, women in Andhra Pradesh have lauded Jaganmohan Reddy for being proactive in introducing the legislation that would ensure speedy trial of cases relating to crimes on women.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu was the first to express happiness over the legislation. He tweeted : “Happy to note that Andhra Pradesh assembly has unanimously passed AP Disha Act to speed up investigations and trial of sexual offences against women. If implemented well, the Act can render timely justice to rape victims which is the need of the hour.”

And now Arvind Kejriwal wants to study Disha Act as well. Speaker T Sitaram announced the interest of the Delhi government in the House, complimenting Jagan and the members for passing such a Bill.

But while states look at the Disha Act, it will need support from the Union Law ministry to ensure speedy justice. Two, the apprehension is that it will put an enormous amount of pressure on the police to crack the case in a limited period of time. Given that such cases often need quality forensic evidence and the chargesheet has to be foolproof in order to secure a conviction, it is feared that paucity of time may lead to social media trials instead of real trials in a court of law.

Incidentally, Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has also signed up with I-PAC’s Prashat Kishor who had helped Jagan’s YSRCP in the Andhra Pradesh elections earlier this year.
