All these days K Chandrasekhar Rao was pilloried for not visiting the family of the Hyderabad veterinary doctor who was gangraped and murdered by four men on the intervening night of 27-28 November. He was accused of being insensitive for attending weddings in New Delhi and Hyderabad instead.
On the morning of 6 December, as news of the four accused having been killed in an encounter by the Cyberabad police broke, along with compliments for the cops, slogans of `CM Zindabad’ and `Jai KCR’ were raised as well. Almost as if no one believed the police story of the bid to escape by the accused. As if the encounter had political sanction.
It is a strange dilemma to be in. The Telangana political establishment can neither claim credit for killing the four accused nor can it resist the temptation of looking like delivery agents of instant justice. But the TRS activists are already retorting to earlier taunts of “Where is KCR? What is KCR doing?” by pointing to the voices of the common public who are now congratulating the state’s political and police leadership.
In fact, many a social media user had implored KCR to be like YS Rajasekhara Reddy who was CM when three boys accused of throwing acid on two engineering college students were similarly killed in Warangal in December 2008. That time too, the story was that the accused had attacked the accompanying police in a bid to escape.
On Friday, petals were showered on the police near the encounter site while Disha’s neighbours tied rakhi to policemen deployed in the colony. It is ironic that a week ago, Telangana was protesting against the same police force for having turned a deaf ear when Disha’s family was frantically trying to locate her. Now exulting in the revenge, much of Telangana is celebrating what it is calling Karma. That poetic justice has been served by killing the four accused at the same spot where they had set Disha’s body ablaze.
