Biodiversity Flyover victim gets helps from Andhra Pradesh CM

One of the victims of the horrific accident at Biodiversity flyover in Hyderabad on Saturday was Kubra Begum. This 23-year-old engineer from Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh had come to Hyderabad for an interview at a software firm and was waiting at the autorickshaw stand when the car crashed from the flyover above. Kubra sustained injuries and was admitted to Care Hospital.

For her painter father Abdul Azeem, already under debt, paying the hospital bill of Rs 1.10 lakh was not possible. What’s worse, it was conveyed to him that the final bill after medical procedures were completed on Kubra, would come to Rs 5 lakh.

Azeem’s plight, for no fault of his or his daughter, was highlighted in a report in `Sakshi’ Telugu newspaper, that is owned by Jaganmohan Reddy’s family. The Andhra Pradesh chief minister sent instructions that all the expenditure towards Kubra’s treatment would be borne by the Andhra Pradesh government.

While Jagan’s gesture is praiseworthy, the question is why shouldn’t the driver of the car Kalvakuntla Milan Rao, who escaped with minor injuries because the airbags of his car were triggered in time, pay for Kubra’s treatment. Milan Rao was overspeeding at 104 km/hour as against the prescribed speed limit of 40 km/hour and it is this thrill for speed that killed a woman and injured others. Or as a humanitarian gesture, the expenditure ought to be borne by the Telangana government or the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation since its inability to check overspeeding and rash driving on the flyover by ensuring safety protocols has come in for questioning.
