On a sabbatical from Twitter since he put out that cheeky tweet about having ordered a new set of 3D glasses to watch the World Cup – a jibe at Chairman of Selectors MSK Prasad’s justification of Vijay Shankar as a three-dimensional player – Ambati Rayudu has returned. And this time, on target is the Hyderabad Cricket Association. Rayudu is the captain of the Hyderabad cricket team in domestic tournaments.
In a tweet on Saturday morning, Rayudu appealed `third umpire’ KT Rama Rao, Telangana’s minister for Industry and Municipal Administration. He wrote : “I request u to pls look into and address the rampant corruption prevailing in HCA. How can Hyderabad be great when its cricket team is influenced by money and corrupt people who have numerous ACB cases against them which are being swept under the carpet”.
This is extremely significant because it comes a day after Rayudu decided to take a break from playing for Hyderabad for a few weeks. He told The Times of India that it was a personal decision and nothing should be read into it. But his tweet suggests there is more to it than meets the eye.
Rayudu led Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare trophy tournament and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament and was not reportedly happy with outside interference in who should be in the playing eleven. It is important to note that he did not send this SOS tweet to any of the newly-elected office bearers led by former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin. In fact, his barb about officials under the scanner of the Anti-Corruption Bureau is directed at people who backed Azhar for the top job.
By addressing KTR, Rayudu has revealed the tacit support the ruling TRS gave to the Azhar panel in the HCA elections. What the Hyderabad skipper is doing is to tell KTR that he also has the job to oversee that cricket administration in Hyderabad changes for the better.
Rayudu has been in and out of controversies for the better part of 2019. He was overlooked twice for the World Cup, first in favour of Vijay Shankar and then Rishabh Pant was called in. Rayudu announced his retirement in a huff only to go back on his decision. And now comes this short break and this tweet.
