The AMMK is being taken down brick by brick. V Pugazhendi who has been upset ever since he was removed as AMMK spokesperson by TTV Dhinakaran, has announced that the party has been disbanded. According to The New Indian Express, Pugazhendi has predicted that the leaders who are still part of the AMMK will join the ruling AIADMK soon after deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam returns from his trip to the USA.
Dhinakaran has been lying low after the severe drubbing he received in the Lok Sabha and Assembly bypolls this summer. The AMMK failed to open its account with its only success being in splitting the AIADMK vote and helping the DMK in the bargain. With Dhinakaran’s failure to wrest the two leaves symbol from the AIADMK, he has been forced to go with different symbols in different byelections – from hat to pressure cooker to gift box. This ensured the party failed to register itself in the minds of the voters.
But more importantly, his supporters in the past many months have been restless that despite the media traction Dhinakaran received, it did not translate into electoral success. The RK Nagar victory that Dhinakaran recorded in 2017, is now being seen as a flash in the pan.
The upcoming local body elections will be Dhinakaran’s litmus test. If the AMMK, in whatever shape it will still be left in, is not able to make its presence felt, it could be curtains for the party. All eyes are on VK Sasikala’s release from Bengaluru prison sometime in 2020. Her supporters believe she could be released a few months before her term ends. That would force many in the ruling AIADMK, who owe their political career to Sasikala, to press the reset button on their loyalties.
