Telangana Governor asks KCR Government : What’s happening on RTC strike?

The Telangana government’s Transport Secretary, Sunil Sharma spent 20 minutes at Hyderabad Raj Bhavan on Thursday briefing Governor Tamilisai Soudararajan about the RTC strike that has gone on for 13 days now. But it was not an initiative taken by the K Chandrasekhar Rao government to keep the Governor in the loop. Raj Bhavan had called up the government, asking for a senior person who was handling the subject to let Dr Soundararajan know what was being done to defuse the crisis.

A Raj Bhavan official told Filter Kaapi that the summons followed a number of representations given by opposition leaders criticising the government’s handling of the strike. Over 48000 RTC employees have been sacked while two employees have committed suicide in grief. The High court has been critical of the way things have panned out so far and schools and colleges have been forcibly shut down till 20 October.

More significantly, on Tuesday, Dr Soundararajan had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home minister Amit Shah for the first time since taking over as Governor. While it is not known if the RTC strike that has grabbed national headlines, was discussed with either the PM or HM, it is considered significant that the Governor soon after her return chose to question the government.

It is also pertinent to point out that when ESL Narasimhan was Governor, KCR would brief Raj Bhavan himself. That in this case, the Transport Secretary was sent and not even Transport minister Ajay Kumar, has not gone unnoticed.

In fact, unconfirmed reports said that Raj Bhavan had asked for Ajay Kumar to brief the Governor and that the minister had cried off saying he was busy in a meeting with the Chief minister. The Governor’s office however, denied this.
