As Fadnavis vows Metro wahi banayenge, Thackerays fume

Dear Aaditya Thackeray,

I share your concern over what happened at the Aarey Milk Colony. Or is it a Forest? A bit confused as it is not clear if it is a forest area or are you milking the issue for your political benefit?

Now that some of the disputed trees have been brought down, your coalition partner Devendra Fadnavis says Metro wahi banayenge. As we all know, the BJP’s commitment to construction is unbeatable. But while the BJP seems to understand that the average Mumbaikar (not the Malabar Hill Bollywood crowd), fed up with battling the crowds in Mumbai local welcomes the Metro move, I sense that you feel your CM is missing the wood for the trees.

Anyway, let us leave that aside. Many environmentalists have admired your anger over a thousand-odd trees being cut. Must say the Shiv Sena brand of anger has not ebbed over the years. I remember 1991 when Shiv Sainiks dug up the pitch at the Wankhede stadium and ruined the lovely environment of the outfield. Those days your party used to have a field day doing such stuff. Remember Ferozshah Kotla in 1999?

Your father Uddhav Thackeray’s promise to “deal with the murderers of Aarey” once your government returns to power gives me goosebumps. What you and your father have proved is that the remote control does not lie at Matoshree, as is often insinuated. You obviously were in the dark about the fact that the Shiv Sena-run Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai gave permission to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation to remove the trees at Aarey colony for the Metro Car depot. Kudos to you for encouraging complete autonomy.

It is so heartening to see that despite Environment minister Ramdas Kadam belonging to the Shiv Sena and unable to prevent the green massacre as described by the environmentalists, Uddhav Thackeray won’t move against him now. May be it is because the Election Model Code of Conduct is in place and everyone should display good behaviour.

But I feel disappointed that you said those officials who cut the trees should be posted in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. Because just the other day at the UN General Assembly, Imran Khan accused our surgical strike of having destroyed ten trees beyond the LoC. People will now assume that was also the handiwork of Mumbai municipality manoos

Meanwhile best wishes for your election,
A citizen of India
