Cracks on Hyderabad airport Expressway create panic

A crack at pillar number 20 of the PV Narasimha Rao Expressway that connects the Hyderabad airport with the city has created a scare. Coming as it does within days of the death of Mounica, who was killed when a piece of plaster from the Hyderabad Metro Rail station at Ameerpet, this has led to concern.

A social media post by Telugu filmmaker Kona Venkat led to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) deploying its engineers and finding more cracks in the bargain. The Times of India reports that cracks were found near pillars 24 and 28 (towards airport) and 8 and 10 (to city side). But they were not as significant as the one on top of Pillar number 20.

For now, the HMDA has declared the 11.6 km long Expressway safe for travel. But the question is why did it have to wait for a citizen to point out the crack. Shouldn’t regular checks on the Expressway that is a showpiece of the city’s infrastructure and is used by thousands of vehicles everyday, be checked regularly for maintenance?
