Legal tangle for Chiranjeevi’s Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy

It is going to be touch and go for Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. The Telangana High court has deferred to 30 September, the next hearing on the petition filed by the descendents of freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, on whose life Chiranjeevi’s movie has been made. It is due for release on 2 October.

The descendents who claim to be the fourth generation heirs of Narasimha Reddy had alleged in their PIL that producer Ram Charan had promised them 10 per cent remuneration of the total cost of making the film as royalty for using their family history in the movie. But the money had not been paid.

According to the Cinematography Act 1952, it is illegal to make a biopic without the consent of the person if he/she is living or the heirs of the person.

In a twist, director Surender Reddy has said that the movie is not a biopic. That is strange because the movie’s trailers and promotion events have spoken of Narasimha Reddy as the first freedom fights in the 1840s and how Chiranjeevi is bringing the hero of Rayalaseema to life on the big screen
