Owaisi goes TikTok

At a time when there have been cases of a few government employees across the country getting suspended for recording TikTok videos at work, a political party has decided to embrace the app.

Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) claims it is the first political party to have an officially verified account on TikTok, which is a social media app for creating and sharing videos. Given that it is a medium used largely by the young internet user, the party plans to ride on it to reach the gen-next voter.

AIMIM’s official TikTok account now has more than 7000 followers and 60000 plus likes on the over 75 videos it has posted. The USP of the app is that the videos are meant to be crisp and funny. Which is perhaps why TikTok now more than 20 crore users in India and it overtook Facebook as the most downloaded social media app in the first quarter of 2019. Facebook in terms of perception is seen as an older person’s app now.

The lip-sync videos of the speeches of the Owaisi brothers are the most popular on the AIMIM’s TikTok page.
