Vijay Deverakonda’s `World Famous Lover’ looks another Arjun Reddy

Is Telugu cinema’s most loved young star getting typecast?

Vijay Deverakonda’s next film which is titled a rather pompous `World Famous Lover’, released its first look and going strictly by the evidence on offer, it seems to be more of the same. The Arjun Reddy template of the rugged look, the unruly mop of hair, the chain smoking and uncontrollable anger and anguish persona.

Wonder what Vijay seeks and looks out for during a script narration. Because there will come a time when the audience will want to see him entertaining them with different kind of roles, say a comedy, a suspense thriller, a mythological or a horror movie. `Dear Comrade’ too had him for a significant part playing the role of the angry and obsessed person who loses control over himself, drowning himself in alcohol and smoke.

Vijay, is no doubt, a wonderful talent to have been unearthed in Indian cinema and hugely popular. But he is drawing storytellers and directors who are playing it safe by investing in the image he has become synonymous with. He experimented with a political film like `NOTA’ but its half-baked script did not do a convincing job with the lead character. In contrast, Pelli Choopulu, his first film as lead and Geetha Govindam, a romantic comedy were likeable films that did not conform to the Arjun Reddy template.

World Famous Lover, directed by Kranthi Madhav, has four female leads played by Raashi Khanna, Catherine Tresa, Aishwarya Rajesh and Isabelle Leite with music by Gopi Sunder. The makers say it is a youthful drama laced with romance. Hope the first look is deceptive and the actor has a surprise in store.
