Rachakonda cops have a fine approach to motorists

The Rachakonda Traffic police has come up with an innovative and people-friendly solution to traffic violations. Instead of slapping the hefty fines stipulated under the Motor Vehicles Act, DCP (Traffic) Divya Charan Rao has started a campaign to facilitate purchase of helmets for those who were found riding a two-wheeler without one.

Those who were found driving without a license, were immediately helped to book slots online at the RTA. For those who did not have a pollution under control certificate, the van with the machine was at hand to immediately check it and issue the certificate. Even those not having insurance papers were helped in getting the same.

On Saturday, the drive was conducted in two police station limits of LB Nagar and Uppal. Forty one cases of riding without helmet were found and six cases of driving sans a pollution certificate. From Monday, the drive will be conducted through out Rachakonda commissionerate limits.

This approach, the police believes will ensure there are no repeat offenders. Telangana’s Municipal Administration minister KT Rama Rao applauded the move by the Rachakonda commissionerate, which along with Hyderabad and Cyberabad takes care of policing in Greater Hyderabad area and covers the suburbs of the state capital.

Gujarat has already announced reduced fines and other states like Karnataka too are likely to follow suit. But if all police commissionerates and district cops implement this carrot instead of stick policy, it would help make the roads a more safe place besides earning them positive vibes. This Telangana model looks more fine than the Gujarat model, from the perspective of road safety.
