Yadadri temple officials offer to remove KCR pillars if religious sentiments hurt

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti let the Yadagarigutta Temple Development Authority (YTDA) face the fire after revelations that K Chandrasekhar Rao’s face and the TRS election symbol of ambassador car were chiselled on the temple pillars at Yadadri, 60 km from Hyderabad. But the defence only seem to have done more damage than repair the situation.

Kishan Rao, the Special Officer at YTDA denied the Telangana chief minister had instructed the sculptor to chisel his face.

“The sculptor did so on his own because to him KCR appeared like God as the noble work was commissioned by him,” said Kishan Rao.

This attempt to elevate KCR to Godly status hardly befits a democracy and even the CM, being a God-fearing person, would be embarrassed by it. The temple is being developed by the Government of Telangana, not by an individual.

The argument being put forth is that the temple has images of Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru as well. Kishan Rao says the intention is to showcase the political situation at the time of the construction of the temple.

The counter argument would be that in today’s day and age, there are myriad ways to record the social and political situation at a particular time. Moreover, this is a temple, not a museum. Having Gandhi and Nehru at the temple does not make a wrong, right.

The argument about engraving the ambassador car is lame. The officials say engravings of rickshaw are also there to showcase means of transport. As are engravings of the Charminar and the Kakatiya arch.

While there is an attempt to make Yadadri a grand temple, the quality of the sculptures look extremely ordinary with poor finishing. Even if you ignore the controversy around the figures, in terms of the quality of engraving, it is hardly an appealing craftsmanship.

The YTDA has offered to remove the pillars if religious sentiments have been hurt. The BJP activists protested at the temple, objecting to chiselling images of political leaders on temple walls.
