DK Shivakumar, vandalism and arson in Kanakapura is anti-public

DK Shivakumar has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the money laundering case and won’t have access to what is happening on the ground in Karnataka. But DK Suresh, his brother and Congress MP from Bengaluru Rural ought to step in and stop party workers and supporters from behaving like lumpen elements.

Protest by all means, call for a bandh but who gives these people the right to destroy public property. Pictures coming in from Karnataka show that miscreants have burnt a KSRTC bus in Kanakapura which is the DK bastion in south Karnataka, stones have been pelted bringing traffic on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway to a halt, forcing the police to divert vehicles.

The problem is no political party covers itself with glory while protesting against what they perceive as injustice. Every stone party activists pelt, every bus they burn, every shop they vandalise is like an extra point in their CV and aimed at making their leader seem like enjoying wider public support.

What DK supporters are doing is anti-public. Every bus they are bringing down will mean more hardship to the people of their own area, not to speak of the loss to the exchequer.

If Shivakumar wants to protest, let him go on fast while in custody or let his brother sit on a hunger strike. To cause loss to the public and make it appear the public is upset, is ridiculous politics.

In the past, the courts have fined the Shiv Sena for such acts of vandalism. Clearly such orders are not a deterrent in today’s world of cut-throat politics. Even Lord Vinayaka has not been spared in Kanakapura where Ganesha idols have been kept on the main road in order to block it.
