Telangana : Exit ESL Narasimhan, Enter Tamilisai Soundararajan

A major reshuffle and new gubernatorial appointments has been effected by the Government of India. The lone surviving Governor from the UPA era, ESL Narasimhan makes an exit after a decade at the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad. After spending two years as Governor of Chhattisgarh, he was shifted to Hyderabad to succeed ND Tiwari, who had to quit in unceremonious circumstances. He presided over united Andhra Pradesh as Governor and stayed on as Governor for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation. Only last month, BB Harichandan was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh, relieving Narasimhan of the responsibility.

But in terms of the language spoken at Raj Bhavan, Tamil will continue to hold a place of pride. Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, the present chief of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit, will replace Narasimhan in Telangana. Soundararajan lost to Kanimozhi in Tuticorin in the Lok Sabha elections and her shift indicates that the BJP is looking to effect a major leadership change in the Tamil Nadu BJP. Soundararajan is a medical doctor and known to be an affable leader.

Veteran Telangana leader Bandaru Dattatreya who was denied a ticket to contest from the Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency, has been accommodated as Governor of Himachal Pradesh. But it seems only one Telangana leader could be accommodated at a Raj Bhavan at a time. So this has meant that Vidyasagar Rao who is set to complete five years at Mumbai Raj Bhavan has not been accommodated elsewhere. He has been replaced by BS Koshyari.

An interesting appointment is that of Arif Mohammed Khan as Governor of Kerala, replacing former Supreme court chief justice, P Sathasivam. This would be seen as reward for his vocal support to the BJP over the Triple Talaq Bill.
