PV Sindhu was over the moon when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent a rather relaxed 15 minutes with the newly crowned World badminton champion on Tuesday. Sindhu, National coach Pullela Gopichand, women’s coach Kim Ji Hyun, Sindhu’s father PV Ramana along with Sports minister Kiren Rijiju met the PM after their return from Basel in Switzerland.
“It was a honour and pleasure meeting him. He called me the pride of India and wished me the best. The support he has been giving to sports is definitely wonderful,” Sindhu told NDTV.
Gopichand who had last met the PM with Kidambi Srikanth, the leading light of the men’s singles Indian brigade, said he has always been awestruck at the PM’s abundant energy.
“Every time I have met him, I am struck by the kind of energy he has. Sitting there in his office, I was wondering all the time that he had just returned from a foreign tour, had gone to Arun Jaitley’s home to pay his last respects and yet he looked so fresh. Nowhere in the 15 minutes that he spent with us, did he give us the feeling that he was pressed for time. He was so relaxed and comfortable. You invariably feel very energised when you meet someone like that with so much positivity,” said Gopichand.
