`Nizamabad ka naam badlo, naseeb badlo’

The Lok Sabha MP from Nizamabad in Telangana, Dharmapuri Arvind says people in his constituency have represented to him to rename Nizamabad as Indur. The belief is that Nizamabad should revert to its original name as it is associated with India and Hindu. It is a demand Arvind, a first-time MP of the BJP, backs wholeheartedly.

Arvind defeated K Kavitha, the sitting Nizamabad MP of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and daughter of Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in the elections this May.

T S Sudhir of Filter Kaapi spoke to D Arvind on why he thinks the change of name is necessary and how it will help Nizamabad district.

Sudhir : What is the justification for seeking a change of name?

Arvind : Some important people represented to me in writing. As a country, we believe in traditions and culture. When a child is born, the naming is done according to his or her janamkundali. After marriage, sometimes the bride’s name is changed for a better future.

As far as Nizamabad is concerned, the name is inauspicious. The Nizamsagar reservoir has been dry for years. Nizam Sugars Factory has been shut for several years. Sugarcane and turmeric used to be highly viable crops here but that’s no longer the case. As a child, I remember villages that used to grow turmeric were the ones who used to have a Maruti 800 in every home.

Now Nizamabad is no abaadi, only barbadi (no prosperity, only destruction). That is why we are saying, naam badlo, naseeb badlo (change the name, change the destiny)

Sudhir : Okay, so that is the justification. But isn’t this rather cosmetic. If you want naseeb badlo, you need to work on the ground. How can a change of name change the destiny of a place?

Arvind : We have 303 Lok Sabha seats in the country. With the other parties, NDA has over 350. We are here to stay. We have shown our work on the ground. Our schemes have reached every doorstep. The same performance will continue.

But we cannot connect development with culture. Development does not mean we forget our culture. Don’t we change our names for a better married life?

Sudhir : And the demand is that Nizamabad should revert to its original name of Indur.

Arvind : Yes. That was the name of this place till 1905 till some sarfira (crazy) Nizam changed the name. That change of name was not with the consent of the people.

Sudhir : So this change of name gets added to the list of Hyderabad and Karimnagar, two other places that the BJP wants to effect a change as well. Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar and Karimnagar to Karipuram.

Arvind : I cannot speak about those places.

Sudhir : But for you to be able to do this, you need to be in government in Telangana.

Arvind : Yes, we are coming to power in 2023.
