At the movies

[Video] Chiranjeevi comes to life as rebel Narasimha Reddy

The much-anticipated teaser of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy was out in five languages – Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. What made it more special was the voiceover given by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan in Hindi, Mohanlal in Malayalam and Pawan Kalyan in Telugu.

`Meet the first Rebel that India has forgotten’ is the tag line of the movie in the teaser. The visuals in slow-mo are breathtaking and help create the vision of the much-loved Megastar of Telugu cinema as freedom fighter Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy. At this stage of Chiranjeevi’s character, a second innings of sorts after the break he took from celluloid while he embraced in politics, the actor clearly wants to do larger than life characters that would inspire a generation.

Narasimha Reddy, a veteran producer of Telugu cinema told me, could be Chiranjeevi’s Alluri Sitaramaraju.

What stands out in the 1:48 min teaser is Rathnavelu’s camerawork, the action sequences and the special effects. The various characters are introduced but in terms of expression, the one who stands out is Tamannah sporting a fiery look. Viewers would be excited if she has another vibrant role like the one she essayed in Baahubali Part One.

What about the much-talked about voiceover? Pawan Kalyan manages to lend it the right amount of gusto while Amitabh’s famous baritone is on display. Mohanlal in comparison in Malayalam is more soft and mellow.

The Rs 250 crore that has been reportedly spent on the film shows in the teaser. It is largely a home production with Chiranjeevi’s wife Surekha and son Ram Charan the producers. Niece Niharika also acts in the film while daughter Sushmita has done the costumes. Not to talk about Pawan’s contribution with the teaser

At the launch of the teaser in Mumbai, Sudeep spoke about the weight factor and he was not speaking merely about the weight of expectations. He was talking about the lavish beards all the male actors had to sport and the heavy costumes.

“On the sets, everyone looked so different that it would take a while to recognise the actor behind the character,” Sudeep quipped.

If the viewers on 2 October and beyond also get in sync with the characters and not just the ensemble cast, Ram Charan would be laughing all his way to the bank. And then unlike what the tagline says, this won’t be a rebel the box office in India would forget.
