Power cut imminent for Kumaraswamy in Karnataka

One reason why the ruling coalition decided to ignore Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala two deadlines set for Friday afternoon and midnight was because it still hopes to make it a dead heat on Monday. But Mayawati’s decision to ask the lone BSP MLA to support the Trust vote was the only bit of cheer it received over the weekend.

If the numbers hold, it will be a power cut for HD Kumaraswamy and the Congress-JD(S) alliance. A political generator has been offered as back-up and this entails the transfer of the CM’s chair from Kumaraswamy to a Congress leader – Siddaramaiah, G Parameshwara or DK Shivakumar. But the rebels are not plugging into the monsoon offer.

So far the rebels have not budged from their hardline position on their resignations. Mumbai, where they are holed up, is looking at Bengaluru closely hoping the endgame is near. It depends on what Speaker Ramesh Kumar decides on Monday. Whether he decides to prolong the suspense to another day or puts the Trust motion to vote on Monday, only this part-time television actor politician knows.

What does Karnataka mean for the politics of India?

That in the naked pursuit of power, anything goes. And it is all about money. Politicians no longer feel embarrassed with terms like suitcases and price tags thrown at them. If you ask the BJP, the party believes downfall of the government would shut out the Karnataka `ATM’ for the Congress. In turn, the Congress has alleged up to Rs 30 crore per MLA has been offered by the BJP.

It is almost as if to form a stable government, horse-trading is imperative. Pun unintended.
