At the movies

19 years after Thenali, Rahman and Kamal Haasan together

It was in 2015 that news of a possible Kamal Haasan-AR Rahman collaboration was first heard. Their fans were excited because the talented filmmaker and music composer had not worked together since `Thenali’ in 2000.

From Filter Kaapi archives : Kamal Haasan’s sequel

On Monday, Kamal revealed that `Thalaivan Irukkiran’ is indeed the project that will see Rahman on board. This was after the music director spilled the beans in a tweet, expressing happiness and excitement to “collaborate with the one and only” Kamal Haasan on a magnum opus. This will be a joint RKFI (Kamal’s home banner) and Lyca Productions co-production.
Complimenting Rahman for his “level of excitement”, calling it “very contagious”, Kamal said `Thalaivan Irukkiran’ is a project that feels good and right even as it is being developed.

The movie is supposed to be a political thriller. When it was first conceived as an idea, it was meant to be bilingual, with the Hindi version tentatively titled as `Amar Hain’. Kamal was to play the lead and if he still does so, it will mean he will be back in films for good. When he embraced politics, he had indicated that there will be no more movies for him as a hero after `Indian 2′ and `Sabash Naidu’. There is no news on whether the two films will see the light of the day. While `Indian 2′, the sequel to the superhit `Indian’ with Shankar never took off, `Sabash Naidu’ is reportedly half complete.

Kamal’s political party Makkal Needhi Maiam drew a blank in the elections in Tamil Nadu but can take heart from a decent showing for a debut in the urban constituencies. The actor is hosting the third season of Bigg Boss right now.
