Akbar Owaisi is back home but health worries persist

The MIM leader in the Telangana assembly Akbaruddin Owaisi has returned home from London where he had gone for treatment. Why this is important is because just a few days ago, he was said to be in a serious condition, with his health taking a turn for the worse.

During an Eid Milaap event, his elder brother and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi asked supporters to pray for Akbar’s health saying “Please pray for Akbaruddin Owaisi’s health. He has gone to London for his treatment. His health has worsened. May allah protect him.”

What’s wrong with Akbar’s health? After all he is relatively young politically speaking, in his late 40s.

In 2011, Akbar was attacked by henchmen of a local tough called Mohammed Pehelwan in the Old city. Hee was shot at and stabbed with daggers and even attacked with swords and even now, fragments of the bullet are lodged in his body and that leads to frequent health complications.

In fact, during the December 2018 Telangana assembly election campaign, Akbar had hinted at not fighting any more elections. He had said, “I have been very sick over the past few days. My kidneys are damaged. There are pieces of bullet near it. Doctors advised me to undergo dialysis a few days back after things got worse.”

Akbar Owaisi looks after the Darussalam hospitals and schools, in addition to his responsibilities as a legislator. But with his fragile health condition, his political work may have to take a bit of a backseat.

Incidentally, this comes when the Congress strength in the Telangana assembly has reduced to six and Akbar Owaisi’s MIM will be the largest grouping with seven MLAs. Asaduddin Owaisi has asked for his brother to be made the Leader of Opposition in the Telangana Assembly.

But even as Akbar is back and his party supporters will be delighted, his fragile health status means he will have to be very careful all the time. Plus there are the legal cases against him, the most infamous of them relating to his hate speech for which he was jailed in 2013.

What does this mean for the MIM? For one, more responsiblity on Asaduddin Owaisi. He will have to look for others in the party to assume more leadership roles if Akbar is going to take a back seat because of his health reasons.
