BJP’s Raja Singh targets Hyderabad cop

Raja Singh, the controversial BJP MLA from Goshamahal in Hyderabad, has taken on the Telangana police once again. In a tweet, he has attached a video of K Srinivas Rao, Inspector of Police, Falaknuma police station in the Old city of Hyderabad where the cop has wished Muslim on Eid wearing a skull cap over police uniform.

“I would like to ask @TelanganaDGP and @hydcitypolice is this even allowed, he removed his police cap and wore skull cap sitting inside his cabin in police station. Hindus are being targeted during Diwali and Dussehra. Is friendly policing for minorities only?” Raja Singh tweeted.

Raja Singh is underlining the point that the Hyderabad police is biased in favour of Muslims and the skull cap in the BJP’s leader’s opinion, is visual proof. Senior police officers not belonging to Telangana say it is definitely a violation as religious symbols of any sort ought not to be worn along with uniform.

“But then police officers do perform Hindu pujas during ground-breaking ceremonies while in uniform. So an inspector posted in the Muslim-dominated Old city wishing Muslims on a happy occasion like Eid, wearing a skull cap for effect, could be treated as acceptable,” says a senior police officer.

The BJP lawmaker’s criticism of Hyderabad police has to be seen in context. On 5 May, Raja Singh was arrested on orders of Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar when he landed up in Amberpet area which had witnessed communal tension after the demolition of a mosque. Raja Singh was to tell Filter Kaapi later that was both surprised and aghast at what Anjani Kumar did.

Also with Kishan Reddy, the newly appointed Union Minister of State for Home Affairs rising up the ranks, there is a competition of sorts building up within the Telangana unit of the BJP. Though compared to Raja Singh, Reddy is seen as a moderate but he too upped the ante by talking about Hyderabad as a safe zone for terror activities in India. Raja Singh as the Hindutva face of the party in Telangana would want to guard his turf and his tweet has to be seen in that light.
