The Good India

An inspector, a constable, a home guard – Telangana’s angels in uniform

Two days, three men in uniform. The same story of courage, daredevilry, compassion and presence of mind.

On Tuesday, Jammikunta Circle Inspector Srujan Reddy in Karimnagar district got a call on `Dial 100′ that two persons – Ravinder and Malliah, both in their 40s – were stuck inside a 60 feet deep well at Madipalle village. The duo had gone inside to remove mud.

“When I reached there, everyone was waiting without doing anything to help the two persons. So I moved inside and found both of them unconscious. I first tried to get them out with the help of a rope but that did not help. We then got a 60 feet ladder from the fire brigade officials and moved them out one by one,” Sujan Reddy told Filter Kaapi from Jammikunta over phone.

Reddy said a couple of fire brigade officials too ventured into the narrow well but felt suffocated themselves and opted out of the rescue mission. But while the mission was praiseworthy, the absence of even basic safety equipment both for the two labourers who were natives of Madipalle and for the police officer, is worrisome. Ravinder and Mallaiah had been inside the well for over 40 minutes.

On Monday, the timely response by Head constable T Mahipal and Home guard Naveen saved the life of a woman who had allegedly attempted suicide along with her husband at their home in Yellareddyguda in Padmaraonagar in Hyderabad. The police got a call on `Dial 100′ about smoke emerging from the couple’s home.

When the two cops reached the home after breaking open a window, they found the husband Murali hanging from the ceiling in the bedroom. The wife Priyanka was hanging in another room but she was still breathing. There was no time to wait for an ambulance and the cops rushed Priyanka to the nearby hospital where she is now in ICU.

The two policemen were rewarded for their courage and presence of mind by Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat.
